Wilgena is located near the town of Tarcoola, famous for the gold rush era of 1880’s and named after the winning Melbourne Cup Racehorse. In the early days it was serviced by railways, which ran through the property. For this reason among others, it was purchased in 1924. At one stage Wilgena Pastoral Lease was the largest totally fenced sheep run in the world. Nowadays, the company has split the properties into two separate enterprises with North Well station comprising the Southern and Eastern portion and Wilgena the remainder.
